Institute for Vocal Advancement

The Institute For Vocal Advancement (IVA) is an organization that offers both exceptional vocal education and a certification program for professional singing instructors worldwide. IVA trains singers and teachers of singing how to use their voices to their full potential in the healthiest and most efficient way. The organisation also seeks to educate and produce the finest voice instructors in the world, by developing, promoting and maintaining the highest standards for the teaching of singing.

IVA strives to develop its program by keeping informed of the latest research in vocal science. IVA also offers education in other essential aspects of singing and performance in order to meet the needs and interests of singers and voice instructors worldwide.

IVA views itself as partners and mentors of—and a continuing support team for—the students and teachers who are involved in the organization. A sense of community, trust, and transparency is essential to IVA. Rather than revolving around a single person, our method of vocal technique is developed and refined as an outgrowth of our uncompromising search for truth and knowledge regarding the workings of the human voice.

IVA seeks to inspire a passion for excellence in teaching and to connect vocal instructors of the world together in order to share, learn, and grow.

The IVA Technique

The IVA technique is based on 17th and 18th Century principles of singing developed by the Schola Cantorum.  IVA's goal is to train voices to sing in a free and natural manner, smoothly, from the bottom of the range to the top with no breaks or sudden changes in quality. Training in this technique gives the singer access to all dynamics, with tonal clarity and flexibility.  Also, training in this technique helps improve a singer’s range, endurance, stamina, breath control, resonance, vocal strength and vocal quality across all styles of music without fatigue or damage to the voice. We accomplish these results by training the singer to find a balance between airflow and intrinsic muscular resistance, all within a resting laryngeal posture.

ARE YOU interested in becoming a singing teacher?

I am Area Representative for IVA. Contact me if you would like to know more about becoming an IVA singing teacher. See Simon Robinson's Testimonial on his journey to becoming a teacher. IVA is a unique organisation and I can't recommend it highly enough for the excellence of it's pedagogical programme and the nurturing environment established by the Master Teachers and the IVA community of teachers.

Discover the basics of teaching the IVA Method in our new introductory course!

The IVA Teacher Certification Program is arguably the most comprehensive training program for singing teachers in the world. It has helped many around the globe to take their teaching to the next level.

In order to help teachers develop the high-quality skills that the IVA Method is known for, our certification program requires a certain amount of dedication that not everyone may be willing to give.

Still, the principles that the IVA Method is built upon are so important for everyone who deals with the subject of singing that we want to enable as many people as possible to at least have a basic knowledge of them.

That is why now, for the first time, you can learn the basics of teaching the IVA Method in our 8-hour introductory course. This course is available online in the form of live webinars, in-person (in selected locations around the world), and as an intensive training course at our yearly conference called IVACON.

As an IVA Ambassador I recently held Perth's first IVA Introductory Course and I am happy to say it was a great success. Check out the photos below. If you're interested in participating in this course message me via the contact page.
